In keeping with his commitment to provide the highest quality care utilizing such technological innovations as high definition microscope evaluation, Dr. O’Rielly is pleased to announce that he is now offering Perioscope.

The Perioscope is an advanced video technology enhanced by 20-40X magnification that can prevent painful and costly periodontal (gum) surgery. Using the Perioscope, Dr. O can see magnified details of tooth anatomy and deposits below the gum line to diagnose and treat gums conditions in a minimally invasive way.

The Perioscopy procedure has been successful in reversing even the more advanced gum problems that can lead to further damage and tooth loss. During Perioscope treatment, local anesthetic is used and a small, fiber optic camera is placed below the gum line.

Because of the unique, state-of the-art capacity of the Perioscope to provide direct vision below the gum line, unseen deposits that cause bleeding and in ammation can be pinpointed and addressed directly. Using this unique visualizing device, healing can be promoted all the way to the bottom of the pocket. This also enables the detection of periodontal conditions and other dental problems in earlier, more manageable states.

Current studies show that nearly half the adult population has some stage of gum disease. The likelihood of gum (periodontal) disease increases with age, rising from 6% in people aged 25 to 34 years to 41% in those aged 65 or older. Although people usually think of it as a localized condition, Surgeon Generals’ reports and a growing number of research studies show that chronic oral infections caused by gum disease can play a role in other systemic conditions. These include heart disease, diabetes, lung problems, stroke and babies with low birth weight.

Additionally, people may have periodontal disease without realizing it, because often there is no pain involved. This is why regular checkups are so important. Another little known fact about gum disease is that it is contagious. The microbes that cause it can be transmitted by kissing or through sharing tableware. So it makes good sense to take care of your oral health today to protect your overall health in the days to come. Using Dr. O’Rielly’s skill and the technology he provides, you can safeguard your health and the health of your family.
